01 November. On Tiree, 24 Whooper Swans flew over late this afternoon and 35 Greenland White-fronted Geese were newly arrived at Loch a' Chlair (John Bowler).
02 November. Fourteen Whooper Swans flew W out of L. Indaal and 44 Whooper Swans on Loch Eidhinn, Islay included 10 juveniles (David Warden).
04 November. A radio tagged Whooper Swan (NA3) was tracked leaving Iceland at 15:00 on 3 November, flying past the Shiants at 07:00 this morning, Barra at 09:00, Tiree at 10:00 and arriving on Islay at 12:00. Not bad going! (per Clive McKay)
11 November. A darvic ringed Whooper Swan (DK4) was on stubble at Strath Farm (The Laggan) Kintyre along with 4 other adults this afternoon. Originally ringed as a cygnet on Iceland in August 2007 it had been seen subsequently at Welney, Norfolk (Oct 2007) and Loch Eye, Ross-shire (Feb 2008). Eight Long-tailed Ducks and 720 Greater Scaup were in L. Indaal off Blackrock today (Alastair Reid).
16 November. Four (1m, 3ff) Goosander were at the mouth of the Killail Burn (Otter Ferry) Cowal.
20 November. Six Common Scoter and 7 Long-tailed Duck were at West Coast Salmon Kintyre. Nine Red-breasted Mergansers were at the mouth of the Killail Burn (Otter Ferry) Cowal.
22 November. A total of 15 Mute Swans, 2 Pink-footed Geese, 67 Greylag Geese, 128 Eurasian Wigeon, 118 Mallards, 26 Common Eiders and 9 Common Goldeneyes were found in Loch Etive during the WeBS count today (Mike Harrison). During a bird Atlas visit to Lismore 21-22 November, a total of 191 Greenland White-fronted Geese were seen at the south end of the island and a single Barnacle Goose was with 12 Canada Geese at Port Ramsay (David Jardine).
23 November. The WeBS count on Tiree today produced: a female Surf Scoter at Hough Bay, very likely to be the same bird returning for its 3rd winter, with 3 Long-tailed Ducks and just 52 Tufted Ducks were on Loch a' Phuill (John Bowler).
25 November. Six Whooper Swans flew upriver at the Add Estuary this afternoon (Lynsey Gibson).
27 November. Two possible vagrant Canada Geese were on Tiree today, a medium-sized bird with Barnacle Geese at Balephetrish (possibly the same bird that wintered there in 2008/09) and a small bird with Barnacle Geese at Ruaig. A juv/female Common Scoter was in Gunna Sound (rare here), a Pink-footed Goose at Upper Kenovay and 19 Shovelers at Loch Riaghain (John Bowler).
28 November. Five Pochards, all male, were in Loch Crinan today – unusual for here (Karl Pipes).
Seabirds, Divers, Grebes, Shearwaters, Herons etc. (and other seawatch species)
02 November. An hour long seawatch at Aird, Tiree (7.30-8.30, wind WNW6-7 with squalls) this morning found 3 Red-throated Divers, 10 Great Northern Divers, 94 Northern Gannets and 32 Fulmars heading W (John Bowler).
03 November. The Little Egret was in the Add Estuary again this afternoon. On the following morning it was just opposite the bird hide. Quite an unusual bird in that it shows extensive yellow/green on the legs and has a bit of yellow in front of the eye (Jim Dickson).
04 November. A total of 13 Great Northern Divers were in Gott Bay, Tiree today (John Bowler).
08 November. A total of 42 Great Northern Divers were counted off Ardpatrick Point, West Loch Tarbert today (Alastair Reid).
10 November. A Great Crested Grebe and 13 Slavonian Grebes were seen in L. Indaal from Gartnatra today (Alastair Reid).
11 November. A Little Egret at the Ulva Lagoons, Loch Sween today may have been the bird seen at the Add estuary on 3 Nov (Karl Pipes).
13 November. Two Little Egrets were standing proudly together on the spit in the middle of the Add Estuary at Islandadd Bridge today where the gulls often are at high tide! The question now is – are there two or three Little Egrets in the area? (Jim Dickson).
18 November. A Little Egret was again near the Islandadd Bridge, Bellanoch at 08.15 this morning (Mrs M McLellan per Lynsey Gibson).
19 November. A total of 59 Great Cormorants were with 110 Shags off Arinagour, Coll today (John Bowler).
22 November. A total of 19 Little Grebes, 5 Great Cormorant, 24 Shags and 15 Grey Herons were found in Loch Etive during the WeBS count today (Mike Harrison) and during a bird Atlas visit to Lismore 21-22 November, a total of 9 Little Grebes were seen around the island (David Jardine).
Raptors, Rails etc
04 November. Three adult and a juvenile Golden Eagles were seen at Upper Killeyan, Islay today (David Warden).
08 November. Climbing the summit on Scarba late this afternoon Terry Robilliard was greeted by a male Hen Harrier and a Merlin was seen at Carnan Mor, Tiree (John Bowler).
14 November. An adult White-tailed Eagle flew over Arinagour, Coll this morning (Simon Wellock).
18 November. Three adult Moorhens were seen together near the swing bridge over the Crinan Canal opposite Crinan Ferry (with a male Tufted Duck) and. nnother Moorhen seen on grass at Bellanoch, making four in all (Paul Daw). At least two Water Rails were calling at Aros Moss (The Laggan) Kintyre (Rab Morton).
20 November. A Merlin was seen at Loch na Cille, Loch Sween spooking Lapwings during WeBS count. Single male and female Hen Harriers were also present in the area (Paul Daw).
21 November. A Water Rail was at Achnacloish Loch, Lismore today (David Jardine).
23 November. Three Coots were at Loch Bhasapol, Tiree - a high count for here these days (John Bowler)
29 November. Three ringtail Hen Harriers were seen coming to roost at dusk near Mannal, Tiree this evening (John Bowler).
Waders
02 November. A Grey Phalarope was seen off Aird, Tiree during a seawatch this morning and a Jack Snipe was at the Reef (John Bowler).
03 November. A flock of 86 Ringed Plovers at Balephetrish Bay, Tiree included a colour-ringed bird from Blairbuie in Wester Ross that also spent the 2008-09 winter at the site. And an Icelandic leg-flagged Sanderling was there back for its third consecutive winter with 2 Purple Sandpipers (John Bowler).
04 November. Waders at Gott Bay, Tiree today included 183 Ringed Plovers, 24 Dunlin and 12 Bar-tailed Godwits (John Bowler).
05 November. A total of 372 Sanderlings were at Gott Bay, Tiree today (John Bowler)
08 November. Four Woodcock were at Carnan Mor, Tiree today and 850 Northern Lapwings and a Bar-tailed Godwit were at Loch a' Phuill (John Bowler).
09 November. A late Whimbrel was calling out on the inter-tidal at Loch Gilp this morning (Andrew Stevenson).
11 November. Four Common Snipe were flushed on the Keillmore peninsula, Loch Sween today (Karl Pipes).
13 November. Three Woodcock seen at Tom-breac Plantation N of Inveraray today were among many sen during Atlas work this month (Paul Daw).
18 November. Two American Golden Plovers were in a field opposite Ceabhar guest house at Sandaig, Tiree this afternoon (Neil Darroch).
20 November. Seven Turnstones were at the Lismore-Appin ferry pier today (David Jardine).
25 November. 98 Turnstones were at Otter Ferry, Cowal (43 at Fish Farm and 55 at Killail) (Tom Callan).
27 November. Seven Dunlins were at Otter Ferry Cowal (Tom Callan)
Skuas, Gulls, Terns and Auks
08 November. Two juvenile Pomarine Skuas and a juvenile Arctic Skua were seen from the Kennacraig-Islay Ferry today (Alastair Reid).
09 November. A Little Auk was seen quite close to the shore off the mouth of the Killail Burn, Otter Ferry today (Tom Callan).
10 November. A Little Auk was seen off Gunna Sound, Coll today and a juvenile Glaucous Gull was off Coll (John Bowler).
19 November. A Little Auk was seen from the ferry between Mull and Coll today and 3 Puffins were off Coll (John Bowler).
Doves, Owls, Woodpeckers etc.
10 November. A flock of 270 Rock Doves were counted at Loch Clach a' Bhuaile, Islay today (Alastair Reid).
18 November. Approx. 40 Wood Pigeons were feeding under Beech trees at Otter Ferry Spit (Tom Callan).
21 November. A Tawny Owl was recorded at Achinduin, Lismore today (David Jardine).
Passerines
01 November. A female Black Redstart was found during Atlas work at Tangy, Kintyre today (Alan Slater), two male Blackcaps and a male Brambling were at Balephuil, Tiree (John Bowler) and a flock of 74 Twite were seen at Rubha Luidhneis, Loch Gruinart, Islay (David Warden).
02 November. A Brambling was at the Reef, Tiree (John Bowler). Twenty Blackbirds were feeding around the chalets at Largiemore, Cowal (Tom Callan).
03 November. A flock of 30 Fieldfares was at Balephuil, Tiree (John Bowler) and 100 Fieldfares or more stopped briefly in a crab apple tree at Tullochgorm, Minard (Paul Daw).
04 November. A Mealy-type Common Redpoll was spotted whilst in a traffic queue at Balephuil, Tiree today (John Bowler).
05 November. A recently dead juvenile Black Redstart was found at Portnahaven, Islay today. On the same day a Sand Martin was flying along King Street, Portnahaven. This is the latest ever record of a Sand Martin in Argyll – by one day. The previous latest was also on Islay, at Ardilistry Bay on 4 November 2001 (Stuart Graham). This morning at about 9.15am at Kilmichael Glassary a very large flock of between 450 and 500 thrushes flew over from Kilmichael Glen and carried on past Bridgend and on towards Lochgilphead. They appeared to be mostly Fieldfares (Lynsey Gibson). A Common Chiffchaff with a wing bar was at Crossapol, Tiree and an abietinus (Scandinavian) – type Chiffchaff, a male Blackcap and 3 Snow Buntings were at Kilkenneth (John Bowler). A flock of 110 Common Starlings were at Ardfin, Jura and 10 Common Ravens were at Craighouse, Jura (David Warden). Two Magpies were seen at Strone, Holy Loch, Cowal (Josie Wall).
08 November. A late Barn Swallow was seen flying over Nerabus, Islay today (Stuart Graham).
10 November. A female Blackcap was feeding in a garden at Otter Ferry (Cowal). (Tom Callan).
11 November. The first Snow Buntings (10) flew N over Machrihanish Seabird Observatory early this afternoon (Eddie Maguire).
12 November. Three Eurasian Jays were seen in a garden at Hunters Quay, Dunoon today (Callum Satchel).
14 November. A total of 16 Bramblings were in Arinagour, Coll today and a tristis Common Chiffchaff had been present the day before (Simon Wellock).
19 November. A female Blackcap and 20 Redwings at Balephuil, Tiree today (John Bowler).
22 November. During a bird Atlas visit to Lismore 21-22 November, an immature Barn Swallow was seen at Baileouchdarach on 22 Nov and a total of 4 Grey Wagtails were found (David Jardine). A single male Brambling was with Common Chaffinches in the garden at Tullochgorm, Minard (Paul Daw).
23 November. A Magpie at Dalmally, Mid-Argyll was unusual.
25 November. Four Eurasian Jays passed through a garden at Otter Ferry with 2 frequently in the garden recently at Otter Ferry. (Tom Callan).
27 November. Still hundreds of Redwings around on Tiree in flocks of up to 70 (John Bowler).
28 November. Approx. 12 "inland" Rock Pipits were on the machairs on Tiree (unusual) today - making the most of a mass movement of parachuting spiders (John Bowler).
29 November. Two Common Crossbills near Kilmory Castle, Mid-Argyll included a very yellowish green individual singing at the top of a conifer – presumably an unusually coloured male (Paul Daw).
